Weathering and Erosion Vocab

Weathering Notes:
Weathering – the breaking down of rocks on the surface of the Earth through physical and chemical processes
Physical / Mechanical Weathering – rocks are broken apart increasing surface area (rock remains the same, only smaller)
– Frost Action – Frost wedging that occurs when water seeps into cracks, freezes and puts pressure against the walls of the cracks
– Root Action – Plant roots uplift and fracture rock
– Abrasion – Rock particles grinding against one another (wind, water)
– Exfoliation – Peeling away of rock (fluctuating temps causing rocks to expand and contract
Chemical Weathering – chemical reactions change minerals. Products have different chemical composition then the original
– Oxidation – this occurs when free oxygen combines chemically with metallic elements (rust)
– Carbonation – water containing carbonic acid dissolves minerals (all rains got it) (strong against calcite minerals such as limestone and marble)
– Hydration – water combines with minerals, most often in granite (mica and feldspars) to form clay
ITS ALL ABOUT CLIMATE:
Physical weathering occurs when it’s cold and moist; alternating freezing and thawing
Chemical weathering favors warm and moist (both need water)
What’s its all mean in the end?
SOIL – a combo of sediments, rocks, minerals and humus (organic material)
Transported soil – Soil carried by erosion and deposition on the bedrock (most soil is)
Residual soil – soil formed by the weathering of bedrock directly beneath it
